Soft Eyes

Have you ever heard the statement, that the eyes are the window of the soul?

Soft eyes hold a hint of :
a gentle smile
a squint
a seeking to understand
a stop for a moment in time
Soft eyes create the space for us to know the priority and yet to see the edges that influence that priority. To see the things we can so readily miss when we are on the move at top speed.
I never saw myself as an artist and yet by a very thoughtful gift given to me by my Staff one year, I discovered or perhaps rediscovered the world of watercolours and art that I had loved as a much younger version of myself.
Many of the principles involved in watercolour also were principles that governed other parts of my life and gave me a deeper understanding of why this art medium resonated with me.
Values was one of those principles. Values had long been the way I had chosen to define and approach my life. Knowing what I valued most and why I did what I did was life changing for me as an adult and as a leader. When I came to understand values were inspirational for me when I paid attention to them. And they also helped me understand when I felt slighted or hurt - usually something that I valued greatly was not valued so highly by the other person that I had taken offense to. Knowing and understanding this changed my relational wealth and enriched my relationships. To appreciate values takes soft eyes.
In watercolour I was taught to squint and look at smething - I practiced on trees, first of all. When I looked at a tree, I saw all the details but when I squinted my eyes, the detail faded and I saw colour, rich and deep and changing because of the values expressed in that colour. it was more than depth of colour or different colours, it revealed shapes and perspectives that I would have missed had I not learned to squint!
In WILD&FREE@HEART this year we are going to learn the valuing of what it means to squint as we care for our hearts and learn to live in the fullness of who we were created to be. Come and join us.
